Garlic Powder

Garlic powder is a finely ground spice made from dehydrated garlic cloves. It’s a convenient and shelf-stable alternative to fresh garlic, offering much of the same flavor but in a more concentrated, powdered form. To make garlic powder, garlic bulbs are peeled, sliced, and then dried (either by air drying or dehydrating) before being ground into a fine powder.

Advantages Over Fresh Garlic:

Tips for Use:

  • Substitution: You can replace fresh garlic with garlic powder, but the conversion isn’t always 1:1 since garlic powder is more concentrated. As a general guideline, 1/8 teaspoon of garlic powder equals one clove of garlic.
  • Freshness: Like other dried spices, garlic powder can lose its flavor over time. Store it in a cool, dry place, away from light, to keep its potency for longer.

Caution:

Because garlic powder is concentrated, it can overpower dishes if used in excess. Start with a small amount, and adjust to taste. Also, garlic powder doesn’t have the same depth of flavor as roasted or sautéed fresh garlic, so in some recipes, using fresh garlic may be preferred.
